Motivation
Motivation
There are many theories about motivation and I will give a quick over view of them here.
Motivation direction:
Sigma Freud said we are motivated by moving away from pain or toward pleasure. He called it the pain pleasure principle. It has also been called the stick and carrot or toward and away from or reward and punishment.
A lot of people believe that toward motivation is better than away from but this is not true. It is best to have some away from at first to get motivation away form what you don’t want and then set up a direction to move toward so that they know were there going.
If people only have away from motivation they may never get what they want because they don’t know what direction they are going in and they have to focus on what they don’t want to be motivated but we normally get more of what we focus on. You may also loose motivation the further you get away from the motivator. This can cause yo-yo type of effects when you set goals
If they only have toward motivation the may not be able to see the obstacles that can get in the way of achieving your goals and may not learn from mistakes of the past.
They could also have toward-toward conflicts for example they want more money and the money will give them more freedom but most people have to work longer hours to get more money so they end up having less freedom which creates a conflict in their behaviour.
You can think of this as a path splitting into a Y shape
The more you get a the less you get b
Or you could have a toward-away from conflict
You can think of this as a wave with high and low points like a W shape
The closer you get to the desired value, the less motivated you become
Once a situation has got so bad the client has to do something we call this threshold we can use this build what is calls a propulsion system by making the way from feel really bad to build momentum and the toward really good to keep them motivated.
Other factors that motivate us are
The value of the goal and how important is it to you to achieve
The preserved difficulties and obstacles that may be encountered
Is the goal set probably SMARTTIPPS?
How much control do you have over achieving the goal and how much control is external to you
Do you know the pros and cons of getting the goal?
When you get the goal is there anything else you will do
What do you have to sacrifice to achieve this goal and is it worth it
